This is the compelling story of a band of rabbits. They are forced travel a great distance from their burrow in order to survive. Hazel, the main character acts as a leader as they travel through harsh conditions and meet interesting characters. There are dangers beyond their wildest dreams that lurk in unexpected places. They have no choice, but to be on constant watch. After lengthy, tiresome travels, they finally come upon the perfect place to dig their new burrow. But new problems arrive as they realize they need does to continue their lives in their new home. They set out on a search for them and come upon a terrible burrow called Efrafa. This burrow is ruled by the evil General Woundwort, and it is up to Hazel to stop him and keep his new burrow alive.
This is one of my all-time favorite books! It has a detailed writing style and constant suspense. I would recommend it for 11+. Although it is a fantastic story, it can be quite intense in scenes as well as somewhat violent and slightly disturbing. It would probably not hold the attention of young children, but it is a classic tale that you should not miss out on! I would even recommend this for adults. I would give it six stars if I could!
